I have 02 mounty with 4.0 AWD. It has the 3.53 gear I think, it has the small tow hitch. What would be good to put in the axles? I am thinking of replacing the fluids with synthetic of some kind. Do I have to use a friction additive with this if so? Also how about the tranny and transfer case. I have changed the transfer a couple time jsut put the factory stuff I believe Mercon V back in it. Is there a better syn. fluid for it? I think the tranny will have to be done with a fill machine right or can you drain it at home and refill it with out pulling the pan? I haven't really done alot of work on this ride so not real familiar with it. Just looking for better fluids when I replace them and maybe something to save me some gas mileage if possible.

STU,

The transfer case is as you mentioned Mercon V which takes about 2.4L's. I changed mine and used Mobil 1 Synthetic.

For the front axle you will need a synthetic oil of your choice that's rated 80W-90(1.7L's) and for the rear axle 75W-140(also 1.7L's) You do not need a friction modifier because you don't have a LS.

The motor will take 5qts of 5W30 of whichever synthetic oil you choose as well.

As far as synthetics go, the best of the best seems to be Amsoil. I use Mobil 1 because I just believe that it's a good oil and good enough for me. I plan on flushing my tranny out soon so that I can better help people that want to do it themselve and I am going to use Amsoil to put back in it. Changing all the fluids to synthetic will help if anything, but you may not notice it at the gas pump.

Look up Aldive to get some ideas on what he did to achieve remarkable gas mileage from his 4.0. He has a 2nd gen but most of what he has done should produce similar results for you. You can even ask him what was the best change for increased gas mileage. Good luck and hope this was of some help.

Thanks a bunch. I just want to run a good fluid and thought the syn would last much longer. I will go to look for Amsoil and stuff sometime. I think I will wait till the weather breaks before I do it though.
