Many of you know that SLP Engineering produces all the styling upgrades for the Ford Ranger Thunderbolt, which includes a non-functional hood scoop. All of the one-off parts that SLP produces are not available for sale, until now. In the recent issue of Truckin mag, I saw an ad for SLP Engineering, and they are now selling the non-functional hood scoops to the public for $129

The hood scoop looks almost identical to the early 80s Mustang scoop that is hard to find. Just by looking at the curvature of the Thunderbolt hood, I'm almost sure it'll fit on an Explorer with little or no modifications. It attaches with double sided tape, but I'm sure you could find a way to bolt it on if you felt neccessary.

For some reason, I cannot find the hood scoop on the SLP website for sale, but it is in there ad, so if you're interested, you might want to give them a call at 1-800-533-5673.

Pics of the scoop:

would there be a way to make that scoop functional ?

looks like mopar fans defaced a ranger up there.

yes, you could always cut a hole and make the hood scoop functional though

What is your definition of "functional"?

that looks like an 83 stang scoop, you can find those fairly cheap on ebay, they are all over on ebay, can get them far cheaper than $129, i think sometimes they go for around 60-70

None of those will fit an Explorer hood. The ones that do are pretty difficult to find, although one pops up on eBay every now and then. Just ask Chris (98FordX24) how difficult it is.

This scoop can be made functional by simply cutting a whole in the hood. Making a way to route the air to the intake would be taking it to the next level.

his scoop fit fine from what i read......and i know none of those will fit the X, but they look the same as the SLP ones

If this "funcional" scoop actually induced outside air under the hood (which I would debate that it wouldn't), what purpose would it serve at that point?

absolutely no purpose unless you had some type of channel under the hood that directed the air to the air filter which by then of course the air wouldn't be cool anymore because of the heat taken by the engine

Robb, merely getting air into the hood while driving is a good thing, because an engine will run better at colder temperatures. Being able to route that air to the intake would be even better because in essence you are taking the cold air and directing it straight into the engine.

Once my scoop gets installed it won't route air to the air filter; but it will channel air over my supercharger, hopefully greatly reducing underhood temps.

Reducing underhood temperature is a good thing, plus the scoop looks goof.

Tough crowd today. I thought it would interest more people. :o

My theory is that a hood scoop in the middle of the hood of a blunt faced vehicle will accomplish nothing becuase the airflow will actually be in a vacuum in the middle of the hood.

Just a theory at this point tho, need to find some evidence now.

If anything it'll released the hot air inside the engine compartment especially at idle where the fan blows air towards the engine and out the scoop.

Proof: I had one in my Camaro that I bought from JC Whitney @ $67. Yes, its functional.

Well, releasing hot air from the engine compartment simply allows more hot air through the radiator to come in. If the scoop wasn't there, the air would simply flow to below the engine. You are releasing hot air, but not replacing it with anything better.

And yes, A Camaro front end it just a tad different than an X front ;) , but out of curiosity, what proof do you have?

I can't find jack cr@p for SUV wind tunnel pics and analysis online. So, my theory remains just that at this point.:(

C'mon Robb, don't be so negative.

You say that, without a scoop, the hot air is allowed to flow below and out of the engine compartment. Wouldn't the scoop just add an extra "outlet" for the hot air? The scoop would just circulate more air in the compartment. It might not make an earth shatterning difference, but a difference none-the-less.

If you're in a hot room, you open a window to try to circulate air, thus lowering the room temperature. SAME goes with the hood scoop.

Plus the scoop is on top. And as we all know. Heat rises. If you want to do a reimentary test of airflow over your vehicle. Just tape a piece of ribbon to the point you want to test. A long piece. It will follow the air currents over your car while driving. Then if you want to localize the test to one area you can just tape a shorter piece of ribbon or something that is easily blown around by the wind to the place (like the supposed location of said scoop) and see how it blows around in the wind there. If it just flutters a little then you know there isnt good airflow there. But if it really snaps around and tries even to curl back on itself because of so much wind pressure then you got good airflow there. Either way if i bothered to install the scoop i would make it functional. But i would rathe have a tunnel ram there. hehe. That would be the coolest coming out of our hoods. Cannot claim it as a soccer mom car now can they??? hehe. :D
