for those of you with an 8000lb winch & best price?

I am considering buying a Warn X8000i for my early model 4 door Explorer and want to know your experiences with an 8000lb capacity winch on an Explorer. It seems on this board there is a 50/50 to 50/75 split with 8000 and 9000/9500 lb winches. Does the 8000lb get the job done, does it ever stall pulling your Explorer (or another vehicle)? Do you ever wish you went to a 9000 lb instead? . I plan to carry a snatch block with me. I dont really want to spend an extra $100 on a XD9000i but I want to do it right the first time.

Also who has the best price on the Warn X8000i? Best I have found is $655 with free shipping.

I have a ramsey 8000lbs winch on mine with 3.6 horse power, I've been stuck in mud up to my headlights (fail in some big holes that didnt look that big) and it pulled me out without a struggle. Its just slow as a turtle, I think the warn draws in a lot faster. However I believe the 8000lbs winch is more than enough if thats what your wondering, and let me tell Ya I've used it a lot! I paid $500 plus another $100 for fairlead.

My buddy has an 8000 in his X and I have the XD9000i on mine. I outpull him in everyway. Speed, stall (never stalled mine yet) and life. I pull out more J**Ps than I pull myslef. Another guy in our club has the 8000 on his CJ5 and hates himself for not spending the $100 for the upgrade. I have seen many 8000s that can't get out of their own way in the snow but some guys like Msupertek have had good luck. Of course, nothing will ever compare to the M8274. I had a warn 8000 on my BII and it worked great but I wouldn't go less than 9000 on an X. I paid 550.00 for my 8000 through Stage West off-Road Center. On my new truck I will go 9500.

Lets face it if you have lots of money get the strongest biggest baddest winch out there. If not and you want to get something that is sufficient a 8000lbs is fine, I also have a warn winch kit (that Ive never used, I am bad about just hooking it strait to the tree with a 35,000lbs strap ). $499 at desert rat made by Ramsey it is 3.6 hp, they also have one for 399 but I don't recommend it because its only 1.5 hp. If a 8000lbs winch won't pull out your 4,200lbs explorer your probably gonna need a lot more than a winch anyways, however at this moment in time I can't think of a situation where this would be true. According to offroad magazine you should always calculate your vehicle weight x 25% then add the two figures and thats what you need. My X actuall weight with all I have on it is 4700 lbs. That sticker on the door is what your vehicles maximum weight can be fully loaded not what it is. Hope this helps, but like I said if you got cash go with the bigger, badder, faster winch no doubt.

Thanks for the opinions and your experiences guys, keep them coming. I am still undecided about which capacity to get. If I had $$ I would get the new thermo sensing winch from warn but that is way out of my budget.

Taxxman, that winch has the removable solenoid, I want one with it integrated but thanks for the link.

hmm what a coincidence had a friend stop by today offering to sell me a 6000 lb winch said it was from a suzuki samerai its new in a box for a 100 bucks guess i dont want it after all

Hmmm. Wouldn't mind a 6K for a rear mount for emergency use only. Could always use a snatch block. Would not use as a primary winch.

think it would be strong enough ?? from what i gathered it had a receiver hitch kit or something to that nature i no nothing about winches except for mine sure can cook good if you are interested i would be glad to inquire further i only want one up front so this would be worthless to me but a good deal nevertheless

Strong enough is a realitive term. I think it would work for very short pulls in a case where the front is in no position to get me free and I need to move the rear. I could always use a snatch block (which doubles the pulling power but makes it twice as slow). I am very interested to know more. Thanks for looking into that for me.

For $100, I would get it in a heartbeat! Use it til it smokes! I wouldn't have it as a primary, but that is a great deal on a secondary.

I did have an 8000 lbs on my Limited... worked like a charm. Sold the truck and hope it still performs good. It is a good idea though to buy at least a 9000 lbs.

I think that an 8000 is OK for a Sport... and might just do it onmy new truck.... should be able to find one for about $600.00 shipping included.

Thanks guys, I ordered a XD9000i.

Milemarker electric winches are good for a really basic winch but they are really slow. Only good thing about them compared to warn is that they have a thicker cable.
