The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Ford Motor Company car fuel economy fell from 1998 to 1999 and below the government standard. This is not the case. In fact, Ford Motor Company exceeded both the passenger car and light truck fuel economy standards. Ford Motor Company is not faulting the Journal as its reporter used as a source a NHTSA report that contained mid-model year projections, not the final numbers. Ford Motor Company filed its final report with EPA on March 31, 2000. NHTSA has confirmed EPA's receipt of Ford Motor Company's final 1999 figures.

For the record, the final 1999 fuel economy figures for Ford Motor Company passenger cars was 27.6 miles per gallon (MPG), exceeding the government standard of 27.5 MPG. This fuel economy performance in 1999 was equal to 1998's performance.

The final 1999 fuel economy figures for Ford Motor Company light trucks (including SUVs, pickup trucks and minivans) was 20.8 MPG, exceeding the government standard of 20.7 MPG. This fuel economy performance in 1999 was superior to that of 1998 by .4 MPG.
