This is unbelievable. I have spent three years drag racing a 5.0 Mustang during which time I had replaced just about every part on it at least twice.

Fast forward to today when I tride to replace the 4 O2 sensors on a 98 V8 explorer i just got last week. NO way Ford. They placed 3 of the sensors so that you need more than just specialty tools. You need to have snake arms about 2 inches in diameter to unplug the sensors once you get them loosened since they are on top of the tranny. It is obvious Ford did this to steer reapairs into the dealership. They could have easily placed them to the side or a much easier place to reach. This is the first time I had to abort a repair and place the old parts back in to get the X running.

Project 12 second N/A X is going to take a while.

I have replaced 3 of the O2s on my '96 5.0, didn't seem all that difficult.

You'll probably want to wear long sleeves if you eat at the Old Spaghetti Factory.

Can't you go in from the top.. under the center console. I took the body off when I did mine.

I havent replaced mine yet and i know i need to. After looking at them, i think i would rather just cut the wires and throw on a 600 Holley with a Performer intake.

I "think" i read somewere about pulling out the center console and getting to them from the interior. But, this seems too easy. Is this true?

I debated pulling the console last night but it was too late, not enough light. I'll try tonight if I get time and post about it. I'm sure you can but why did Ford make it so hard when they didn't have to?

Well, the console removal was exactly what was needed. After the console was out there is an access panel that gives easy access to the o2 sensor harness.

It was just what the Dr. ordered. Tip in throttle response is much improved as well as all around performance. I may take it to the track next week to get a baseline run before the mods begin. Thanks section535 and james t.

if you think thats bad... i took my tranny out and rebuilt it and had to unplug everything underneath there.... i didnt realize the center console came out for access.... but the bad part was putting it all back together and realizing that three of the oxygen sensor plugs are within inches of each other and realizing you dont know which one goes where.....

every company does this, a lot of new vehicles have oil filters in unbelieveable places,

i would just love to kick some of those vehicle designer's in the nuts for not thinking
