2007 Ford Edge
I own a 2007 Ford Edge that has a foul "earth" smell that comes from my vents when I use the heat/defrost. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it's horrid and seems to be getting worse overtime. We changed the cabin filter and saw no change. I've been in the market for a newer/used Explorer, but I'm wondering if this is an issue with all Ford makes/models. Not so sure I want to rush out and buy another Ford if I'm going to have the same issue. The research I have done on-line is not promising as far a fix goes for my current vehicle. HELP!

Mold or mildew in the duct work. I've never heard of it being vehicle or brand specific but can happen to any of them if water and dust builds up in the ducts. Does seem to be slightly more common with convertibles. Sometimes you can luck out and spray some bleach water into the ducts and take care of it but from dealing with antique cars most of the time the duct work has to be taken out and cleaned and or replaced.

The cheapest way to stop it is to turn on the AC full blast. on recycle cabin air, open the windows and spray Lysol into the vent on the top of the dash by the windshield.

There are commercial products available. But Lysol will work. You have to kill the mold in the system to kill the smell.
