Today i installed my 2"body lift on my 2000 Ford Explorer XLT (RHD). But this isnt about that!
While doing the install, i had the carpet up underneith the drivers seat. As i lifted the carpet, i saw 1 brand new key, on keyring with label attached with some code
Now this doesnt sound normal to me. Ive had the Explorer since new. Nothing has ever been changed until i did body lift today.
The key turns the ignition and starts the car. What worries me is if someone broke in and found the key, goodbye car :thumbdwn:
Now, im from Australia, so drivers side is reversed to USA. But has anyone ever found a key? When we bought the car, we were given two sets of keys, like normal. I just find it abit strange!

The code may be your keyless entry code. It does'nt make a lot of sense for a spare key to be hidden inside of the vehicle. Did you buy this one new or was it used? If it is used may be the previous owner put it there and forgot it?

I also found a spare key for my ex when doing a lift. it was an aftermarket key that was tied to the front of my frame with a piece of wire.

go the eels mate dont get in a twist you got the key i meen mate if someones going to steal your car they will break the wind screen or somthing cheers mate griffo

It's more than likely someone programmed an extra key to use all the time, and stashed one inside the vehicle in case they lost their keys while they were out and about.

Well he say's he's the original owner so he would know if it was an "aftermarket" stash

I missed that part....

If it has the key cut code tag and the bar-code, it's bound to be one of the originals. It's possible that the dealership stashed one of the originals as a matter of policy, or it's possible one of them got knocked loose as it came down the assembly line, dropped in, and then the carpet was installed. When it arrived at the dealership with only one key, they would have had to program at least one additional, and may not have deleted the other one from the system. Who knows? It's one of those mysteries that'll probably never be solved. Ford does not, as a matter of policy, hide an extra key under the carpet intentionally.

Now I gotta go and pull up my friggin carpet

Maybe it could be a universal key that can start-up any Ford vehicle???

Yeh ive had the explorer since new. Its just really strange how it was just sitting there. I thought it might have been misplaced, but its not every day you lift up the carpet and find another key to your car
