My truck has been doing this as well, but mostly when I try to put in 4x4 without the tires moving (stuck in 2wd)

I would guess that the hubs are about to go. Mine did the "popping" thing for about a year before they totally died. I replaced them with the warn hubs and now everything works fine.

My '97 was doing the same when I turned in 4wd. I took it to Ford and they said there didn't appear to be any problems and that it was normal behavior. Dig back into this section a little and find my old posts "Jerking in 4wd" and "Come on Guys, Help me out here". It may help you some. If it is doing this when you are going straight, it may be the hubs afterall.

If the popping occurs while you're driving in 4wd (not just while engaging) then your auto hubs are cooked. Get a set of Warn manual hubs, you won't be sorry.
