Ok, before I begin let me tell you that I did a search on this board and did not come up with any hints as to what my problem might be. I picked my truck up from the shop last week after having the transmission rebuilt. Went fourwheeling today and got into a situation where I needed four wheel drive. It will engage into 4HI, but when I tried to put it into 4LO, it would not go. After pressing the 4LO button, it completely disengaged the four wheel drive, as in it went out of 4HI and bach to 2WD. The 4LO light did not come on and after pressing it the 4HI light went out. I had it in neutral with the brake on as I have done the few times I have used 4LO in the past. Do you think it could be the shift motor and it coincidentily (sp) needs to be cleaned at the same time the transmission was gone through. BTW, I have had some problems with the swith in the past (on the dash) and I have a new one on the way, I guess this could cause the problem also, huh?

I have the EXACT same problem. After playing with it a little bit, I can get it into 4High and 4Low, but rarely on the first try. My first thought was that it was the shift motor, although I had rebuilt it not too long ago. So I went ahead and rebuilt just this last weekend. It still looked ok, but I cleaned it anyway and put it back in. The problem was not fixed. So I'm thinking its possibly two things, 1)the shift motor is beyond rebuild help, and/or 2)some electrical problem which I have no patience trying to track down. I would also like to here some suggestions by some other people.

Did you remove the cover

and clean the switchplate? Be sure to notch the cover so it goes on back at the same place. I cleaned the motor up as I had done before but this time I removed the switch gear so I could "run the motor in" for about 15 minutes. It tripped my bench power supply at over 4.5 amps. Took the motor apart again and injeced some transmission fluid into the bearings and polished the shaft. After a short run in it was less than 0.75 amps. These bearings really dry out from heat and I think the electronics goes into current limit. Motor should easily operate with a brake light in series with 12V.

my 4 lo won't work either. 4 hi works. but when i push the low button it makes all these clunking and banging noises underneath and then shifts back into 2wd. what could cause that??

Biker, that's sounds like your shift motor not working properly. May not be shifting all the way, getting into the proper position. Try taking it out and cleaning it. Instructions can be found on the Singleton Maintenance site.

Guys... i just had this problem. Mine was a little worse where my 4HI and LO lights would flash in sync and nothing would engage. Turns out the shift motor was totally bad and had to be replaced... not rebuilt.

Hope that helps

Hi It looks like I might have that problem too it will not go in hi or lo. Where can I find that info on how to clean that shift motot????
