After Going to Mammoth over the weekend with my Girl Friend I noticed my Fuel consumption went from 340 miles to the tank to just about 120 miles. Keep in mind that every one from behind me was getting smoked out with black smoke from a truck that now was running way too rich.
Since I didn't have a code meter I took it into the dealer to check it out and they told me basicly that my o2 sensor, MAS air flow, and my pressure regulator was bad (80 pounds of pressure by the way).... Grand total to replace all of this was going to be $1266 You know what I told them ... After which I called auto zone in Santa Monica and was able to get all the parts that I need for $240...

so I have replaced almost everything so far except the FPR
My truck is a older 1991 XLT explorer 4x4 with the weird spring load fuel line that attaches to the FPR that has a black retainer clip to it... I looked in haynes manual and noticed that there is a special tool that is needed when I called ford to ask if they sold this tool they told me they don't make it and I would need to call snapon to get this special tool. Since ford didn't want to give me the corect part number for this tool to order from snapon would anyone know from past experiance what the part number might be ? and or another alternative to relese this poorly designed hose ????

Thanks for your help

Congratulations on not getting bent over by the $tealership. Sounds to me as if you don't even need all that you did get. I would start out by replacing the FPR and ***CLEANING*** the MAF. They can be cleaned and usually do not require replacement. Here are the details. Dead Link Removed

As for your FPR, this should help you. Dead Link Removed
Your question about the tool for the fuel fitting, you can usually find them at AutoZone or another major parts place for less than $10.

My suggestion about your O2 sensor, don't replace it until after you replace the FPR and drive it for a while. Many times, when the fuel system has been straightened out, the O2 sensor will clean itself off in less than a tank. If you then still have problems with it, then change it.

My own personal opinion, I would NOT go back to that dealership again.

Thanks IRA for getting back to me I know Bent over for the dealer Sorry but Homy don't play that !!!! the nerve of those people $1000 dollars for labor ....

Well anyways the problem I seem to be having is that Perhaps I am not explaining it right to my local parts store about this Fuel line disconnect tool .... and also I am not too sure as to what it looks like .... so my question is that if you or someone has purchased this tool would you know what it looks like and or a part number so I can start from there ???

Thanks in advance

Sorry, but I can't help you with the tool. I have seen a picture of it and I think it was in my Haynes or Chilton manual (forgot which one I have for the Exploder). Mine did not use a special tool. Mine was just held in place by 2 bolts, only had one vacuum line, and the end of the FPR just slides into the fuel rail. I do remember it had an o-ring on it and wanted to make sure I did not lose it. It has been about 8 months since I changed it. Are you sure it uses this special tool?

I just found this tip about changing the fuel filter and it talks about the "tool". Maybe it will help you. Dead Link Removed

Good luck.

Ira,

I am almost certain that I need this special tool... Reason beeing beside the two bolts holding the FPR and the ruber vacume line that I can see on the side of the FPR there ofcourse is this fuel line that goes into the FPR that has that black retainer clip holding it together and I asume that the other thingy your talking about the O ring that probley goes to the part that slides into the fuel rail... You must have taken off the fuel line to the FPR ???

Anyways I am starting to think that just cutting that FU#$ing fuel line hose with some wire cutters isn't a bad IDEA since the dealer wanted $1266 for the job what's another $165 dollars for a new fuel line ....

Appreciating all of your help

Ok, I went outside and took a look at mine. It is cold in Tennessee...33 degrees already and it is just 8PM. Mine has a vacuum hose, the plastic nipple that goes (slides) into the fuel rail, and a threaded fitting on the top. The fitting is steel and appears to be about 1/2" or 12 mm. It has a steel braided line feeding into the fitting (nut) and this is probably the fuel supply line from the tank to the engine. It does not have the clamp that you are talking about. The 2 bolts hold it in place, and before attaching the bolts, the plastic nipple is pushed into the fuel rail.

I don't know if you have the same system as I do, but I do not have the clamp.

Hope this helps.

This is what i need

pressure regulator fitting tool-T90P-9550-A
page 4-4 in haynes manual .......
Where can i find this tool ?

I went to a auto parts store and bought an entire set of the fuel line tools. they are cheap.. They were plastic. I cost me about $15 or so. I had to try all kinds of stores until I found one that had a specialty section.. If I remember correctly Leslie made this set.

If we are talking about the same thing, the "tool" is a plastic thing that will slip over the fuel line and has two nipple looking things that slide into the coupling.. You push the "tool" into the coupling and then turn.. and it comes apart. This is the same tool I ahve used to take a part fuel lines on other fords (early 90's Taurus, '89 sable)

Well After toying around for a while trying figure out how to disconnect the Fuel line off the old FPR on my 91 explorer XLT I did the following and it worked….

I first Depressurized the fuel system then I removed the vacuum line that is connected to the side of the FPR I then removed the two bolts that hold the FPR to the Fuel Rail then I pulled the FPR nipple out of the fuel rail then I flipped the FRP upside down so I could see the Fitting that was giving me all this trouble, after which I came up with A great Idea to hacksawed the shaft right were it starts to come out of the FPR, leaving enough room so I could still pull on the shaft . Then I took two screwdrivers like the ones you use for eyeglasses so I could push them aplying pressure into the two small key holes on the fuel line fitting . While doing so I took a pair of pliers and pulled on the shaft that was in the fuel line fitting and with not much effort out came the shaft from the fuel line fitting…

Note:

If I wasn't going to replace the FPR with a new one anyways I wouldn't have done it the way stated above.

You can find the right tool however at the link below... the one I needed was Stock#:KD 3408
