Help with Freinds 96 Mercury Sable

Alright, a buddy of mine has been having some problems with his car. Figured if i let him post it to the think tank here he might get some answers without having to shell out money to get it looked at

ok, first off the car has a tendancy to get right to the point of over heating with needle near the H, but not actually overheating and i can't figure out why?
but when you put the defroster on the needle drops back to normal.

Second, the heater in the car now only blows cold air no matter what, even the defroster.

Third there are various random lights that come on on the dash and don't know what they mean or what they are trying to tell me because i've had them looked at and my mechanic said he couldn't tell without running a diagnostic.

and finally my radio stopped working but it didn't power down the radio still works and if you put a cd in it plays but you hear nothing from the speakers.

I think this all had something to do with a bad wiring job that I inherited with the car and which subsiquently caused a secondary power outlet that was installed in the car to catch fire.

please help a lowly peon!!!

For the heating issue;

Has he been losing coolant (needing to add it every so often). If he has, he may need an head gasket job. Also, he may look into his thermostat - that may be acting up.

Says he hasnt been loosin any coolant.

Starting to look like a bunch of unrelated things all at once. Last nite the temp gauge was fluxuating alot, wich leads me to beleive its the sensor

thx for the sugestions on the heating problem Drew, atleast that will give him a place to start looking. Alot more usefull then anything i came up with!
