Hi guys,

got a little question for you all...
is there any difference between the front brake rotors for a 2wd Explorer and a 4wd Explorer?

On first gens, YES, on second gens, I dunno. The first gen ones have a smaller hole in the center and the center part sticks out farther. It may be similar on 2nd gens. GO to an auto parts website and see if they show pics.

Yes there is a big difference. 2WD rotors have the lugs IN the rotors, while 4WD rotors are free floating and go OVER the lugs.

that depends upon year and model.... on a first gen the lugs are in the rotor even if the truck is a 4x4....

the outer hub assembly sits over the rotor [and lugs] to drive the front wheels when it recieves power from the axle inside.
 






I was about to say, I know my lugs are attached to my rotors.
 






Call the dealer. Don't ask the auto parts guys at Kragen or Autozone. They have to idea.

Some parts clerk tried to sale me 2wd rotors for my 4X4 91. Luckily I brought mine in to compare.

He was such an idiot. Although the dealer may not be any different.

91-94... the studs are attached to the rotors on both 2wd and 4wd. I am not sure if they are the same or different though.

95-02... the studs are attached to the rotors only on the 2wd. The 4wd and AWD have the same rotors and these slid onto the studs which are already attached to the hub.
 






This is true for the gen 2 EXplorers. The 2WD includes the hub and the 4WD/AWD has floating "hat" type rotor. We carry the Power Slot Rotors. These cool better than stock and are cad plated to help prevent rusting. They work great with the Carbon Metallic Brake Pads from Performance Friction.

JOHNV do you carry slotted rotors for the 1rst gen? Im in need of new rotors again for the 3rd time, and would like to try something different. THX James
 






We do carry the slotted rotors for the early Explorers. They are cataloged to fit 93-94 Explorers. They have the sensor for the ABS, but can be installed on the early non ABS models. It id easy enough to remove the sensor from the hub. The combination of the slottted rotor and carbon metallic pads have proven to extend the life on all Explorers. But we know that the early ones a hard on brakes. I know from personal experience. I have a 94 4WD XLT and my wife drives it hard! This set up almost doubled the life of the front pads. (your mileage may vary).
 






Ok well i wanna set. My rotors have lasted 1 year each untill they are warped and stress cracked. I am hard on the brakes. How much is a set for my 92 X 4x4? And How do i go about buying these. Thx for your time- james
 












My brakes suck. I just changed rotors and pads, and now with my heavy wheels, braking sucks. The pedal is spongy. I thought about Powerslots, but I concluded that it wouldn't be worth it. The rotors themselves aren't the issue, it's the weak caliper and the small size of the rotor that's the problem. I'm going to find a way to get 13-14 inch rotors to work sometime in the beginning of next year.
