Front Crash Sensor

code 42 for the front airbag sensor 6L3Z14B004AA

I have my wife's 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer that is giving me code 42 for the front airbag sensor 6L3Z14B004AA. After disconnecting the battery, I took it out, was in bad shape, corroded beyond cleaning and repairing. My question is: until I buy a new one, can it just be driven without it? I don't have to worry about the airbag deploying, am I? I know the airbag light will remain on but the airbag system will be disabled and airbags will not deploy, right?
Thanks for your answer.

From post #8...
I left mine unplugged for over a week without problems.

I have that code too. will check today!! thanks for the tip!

So did replacing this sensor resolve your airbag light issue? It was a Code 42 that you were getting. correct?

Do you remember the cost on the part as I looked up the part number you listed on the parts site and it said that my wife's 2004 Mountaineer uses a different front sensor (even though it looks identical to the part number you gave).

Thanks.

Correct...and yes, it resolved my issue. No air bag lights since I changed it.

Sorry, I do not remember the cost...probably due to the fact that the place I bought my truck from paid for it. Yes, they sold it to me with the airbag light on.

Please just use whatever part number your dealer shows for your year and model...you really don't want to mess around with this.

Hey all,
I was in a little fender-bender in October 2012 (I side swiped someone, my drivers side with their passenger side). Since then my Airbag light blinks 4x's, then 2x's and will repeat this pattern until I buckle my seat belt. After my belt is buckled it stays on solid. It drives me nuts. Is there any way I can get it to turn off? I was the only one in the car at the time of the accident and wasn't going any faster than 35mph.

Oh, I have a 2003 Ford Exploder XLT.

Thanks

I have a ford ranger 2010 wildtrak ...i am getting airbag flash code 44... where is the front crash sensor located in this model... i have look under the bumper...either side of the radiator...and found nothing... all i have located is the side impact sensors under the b pillar. Any help will be greatly help

I know it's an old post (at least at the start), but I wanted to thank Partsman109 for starting this post. I have a flash code 42, on my 2005 Explorer Sport Trac XLT, and looking from above the sensor looked fine. Today I disconnected the battery, and did some errands. When I returned I unbolted my sensor, and like Partman109's mine had similar cracking, and corrosion around edges of the bolt hole. I wanted to put a multi meter on the pins just to see if these might be tested. When I placed my meter probe on one of the pins I was surprised to see it move quite a bit. I'm surprised it hasn't broken clean off. I guess it's corroded off on the inside, but barely held by the plastic. Luckily my connector is bright and shiny so I won't need the pigtail.

So I'm calling the dealer to see what they will soak me for one of these. At least they are not charging me labor etc. for finding a bad crash sensor.

Thanks again Partsman109

Picked up my crash sensor today from the Ford dealer. Cost ~$101 installed it myself, and voila no air bag flash code. Yipee :dpchug:

I have a 05 Explorer Eddie Bauer and just got code 42 for front impact crash sensor. What part number did you use for this sensor because I am seeing 2 different sensors. 1L2Z14B345DA and 6L3Z14B004AA. Just wondering which one is correct? When I go to Ford parts website, it says that 6L3Z14B004AA isn't listed as a part for my vehicle. Also can the sensor be replaced without having to remove plastic guards and such?

Northofthewal Just took a run out, and copied down my front impact sensor number 6L-14-14B006-AB.

When I removed my sensor per the instructions in an above post there was a identification tag on the sensor that I used when asking for the replacement at the Ford dealer parts counter.

I am able to see my identification tag with a small inspection mirror. My tag faces the front. My sensor was held on with one bolt through the sensor.
All I removed after following the instructions was the single bolt (and the small ratchet that I dropped umpteen times) If I look straight down I can see the bolt. I was able to reach down from above( behind the grill).

If you need tomorrow I will take a photo of mine, and post it here.

Smalltownusa.. that would be great if you could post a pic of that. It just seems like a tough space to get any tools in there without removing stuff. I'm hoping I don't need to replace the pigtail wire as well. Mine looks pretty corroded. I guess New England winters are hard on it! I see you are from western Maine? Whereabouts? I'm actually from northern Maine near Houlton, but now live in Manchester NH. Thanks again

Hey all, I have a 2003 Explorer XLT 4.0 Flex (not sport, not bauer), getting code 42. Can't find the part number anywhere to ensure I get the correct replacement. Anybody have access to the ford manual and can pass along the correct part number for my Explorer would be greatly appreciated!! Trying to order the replacement but seems every site has a different ford part number, which is making me nervous I'm going to get the wrong one.

I had a bad crash sensor on my 2005 Sport Trac. On mine there was a stuck on label with an ID number on the sensor. I was able to read my part number using a mirror.
There were some on E-Bay, but I bit the bullet, and purchased mine from the Ford dealer. I think my cost was approx. $80.
