I have a 94 Ranger XLT 4.0. My 4X4 does strange things. When I put it in 4X4 low or high, it may or may not work for a little ways. (a few feet). When I turn the wheels to the right , it will make a banging noise. I believe the differential is bad. I can jack one front wheel up and lock the manual hub, and turn the wheel. The axle will turn but the drive shaft doesn't turn. I can do this to either the right or left. This tells me the spider gears are bad unless Ford has something different.
If this is true, what is involved in changing the carrier section. It looks like a nightmare!
