If you haven't already, you might want to check the front axle u-joints. I was getting a lot of noise that I thought was coming from the diff, but turned out it was fine, and problem was the u-joints were both completely bound up with rust. Still was a lot of work to replace them and the seals, wheel bearings, etc., but didn't require going into the diff at all.
