I have a 1997 ford explorer 4.0 sohc with 150,000 miles.

Lately it sound like the solenoid that connects the 4x4 is not fully dis engaged or cannot fully engage.
I get a clicking (2-4 times per tire rotation) when driving. If I were to engage the 4x4 switch it will get louder and sound like it might be doing damage.
When I put it back to 2 wheel it will quite down and not make as much noise but then louden up again.
If I am in 4x4 low it will engage fine and not make a noise.

Anyone tell me what I should look for to fix?

I was selling this truck this month and do not want to put a hefty fix on it.

Need help... anyone ?? Bueler,,, Bueler?

I would suggest removing the t-case motor and clicking it over by hand. It could be the motor is bad or it could be the entire t-case is no good and a shaft bearing is broken.

Thank you. Will start there tonight.

Ding Ding Ding....

Front Drive shaft it is....

Had a buddy do it and cost $200 with all parts. Plus beer.
