I have a 1993 ex- sport 4.0 ltr. auto.

When I engage the 4x4 it make a clunking noise and when I go back to 2 wd. it still makes the noise until I stop and back up a few feet (2) then it goes away?? the banging i can feel on the floorboards so I know it must be a $$ problem. oh and by the way when I was 4x4ing I hit a stump and my right front tire is now back a little further than the front left tire. hmmmm might be a bent axle, I don't know. but it is possible that these two probs are related. thanks

It's normal for your 4x4 to make some additional noise because you're turning everything up front, which you don't do in 2WD, and it's normal for that noise to continue until you disengage the autohubs by backing up. Just how much noise is "normal" is a judgement call I guess, but serious thumping and banging is probably a problem you should look into as soon as possible.

You didn't say whether the noises started after you hit the stump, or if they were there already - if it's after, the answer should be obvious.

Even if they're not related, if your rt. front wheel is back, I'd assume that you'll get all kinds of noises and vibrations from the front driveline in 4WD. Not only this, but you'll also scrub the hell out of the rt. front tire and wipe it out in no time, because your front end alignment has been thrown WAY off.
