Has anyone out there ever tried to put a straight axle and leaf springs on the front of an Explorer?
What about converting from torsion bars to standard springs?

Yes it's been done quite a few times...
You can check Rick's X by clicking on "featured explorers" on top/right of this page. Then select Rick Horwitz...
I know you're new to the site and I don't want to be rude but before posting any question try a search first.
Otherwise you won't get any answer because people get tired of answering the same questions over and over... The solid front axle swap has alredy been discused a hundred times.
For the springs instead of t-bars, someone posted a picture of a really nice lift using this setup a couple of days ago.
I don't remember who but you can try a search ;-)
Hope this help and welcome to the Xplorer family.

He's looking for members that used leafs for the front on the solid axle swap. As far as I know only oknut has tried this. Rick and the other members have all used coils in the front. :D He's also on the featured explorers. Check under Knut.

Once again I didn't mean to be rude. I was just trying to help since the post didn't get any replies.
Anyway ypu can check Dead Link Removed for the coilover conversion/lift.

You weren't by no means... heck, I've done the same thing several times. :)

O ya... never saw that... Bruce... Welcome to the site. You'll find anything and everything all right here.

Question for you Lee. Why would you like to go with leafs instead of springs? Don't you get more flex out of coil springs correctly rated? -Even if it looks that Knut doesn't have any problems,LOL-
I've done a few coilover conversions on Land Rover series and people were amazed by the flex we got out of these things. The only reason I can see is it's probably easier to go with leafs if you're looking for a HUGE lift like 10" or more.

In many ways you can get the same, or better flex out of leafs. I'm not really a big fan of the solid axle swap, so I can't really help you. I do know that Oknut also has a v8 and beefy front and rear axles, with plans for bigger. I'm sure leafs are also better suited for the extra weight. He was running 44's at one time, and I think that may still be in his plans. There's your lift.

:D
