Wow..been awhile since I been on since I'm working alot, but anyway, both my 95 and 96 explorers while driving sometimes in 2wd you feel constant thumps But when switched to control-trac (4auto, when the axle connects) it stops so I'm wondering if maybe the axles aren't always disengaging? but what wouldn't make sense about that is most of the time (unless rainy roads) I'm in 2wd so then the axle would already be in disconnect position so you see this thump isn't always present it just sometimes does it when I start either truck up and start driving it and then sometimes I can start up and take off and have no issues, so do any of you at all have a clue as to what would be causing the thumps in my explorers?
And 2 the 96 explorer the wheel bearing is going bad the one day I was driving down down the mountain and it jerked to the left twice, now note that this happened previously with other tires so I switched them and put good tires on it and it did it again but hasn't done it since Monday so I'm also curious about what that maybe. Thank y'all for taking the time to read this long thing tried to be as clear as possible if you want more info or anything just ask thanks alot!

Does it have auto 4wd? I'm ot sure what years had it and which ones didn't. If so, does the thump sound like when it engages on sand, snow, or ice?

wondering if you figured out the front axle thump. I have a 95',with the same issue. usually when I first start up, I feel it on drivers side left foot.thru the floor boards.local mechanics cant figure it out. I thinking the same as you. but dont know how to fix it? any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry haven't been on in awhile, and it has the 2wd/4auto/4low selector but the thump only does it when I start it up and drive it after I haven't driven it for a few hours but it doesn't always do this, I'm bout to just switch to live axle and see if this issue goes away because I'm more than willing to bet its within the axle disconnect axle. The thump isn't like the thump that you get when the t-case engages and disengages 4wd.
