I'm new here and the answer to this is probably here somewhere but there is so much info its difficult to track something down...
I have the 97 eddie bauer 4x4. It is a very intermittent problem..like once every 50-150 miles. Occasionally when I slow down - going less than 30 mph - foot off the gas and on the brake. There is what I can only describe as a fast whirring - chain across a small sprocket -like sound -spinning faster than the tires for sure. It will continue to make the sound until I come to a stop..then it wont make the sound again for another 50-100 miles. It almost sounds like it is coming from under the hood but cant be sure about that.
