I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLS with about 82000K miles on it.

Recently i have been hearing a noise in the front end, it sounds like its coming from the engine compartment. The Noise sounds lkie something is winding. The faster i go the faster it goes and at a higher pitch. The noise starts at around 20 to 25 miles per hour and goes away at about 20 imediatly.

Irecently took it to the Ford Dealer near me and had it checked. They said it was in the transfer case so they replaced tons of bushings, bearings, and seals. Basically it was overhauled. Total costing 300 dollars in parts alone. Not counting the other 600 in labor.

I got in it and started driving and still the same noise in the frone end was there.
My girlfriend said a similar noise was comming from her car (a Ford Escape) and it turned out to be the power stering. But I don't know.

Anyone who has the slightest idea what else it could be please help!

probably the same thing here,, Fords in Canada are kind of known for that whining from the power steering because of the cold winters, so we get used to it,, i have 320,000 on my EX and it has always had a power steering whine, just check the fluid and make sure it is at the right level,, unless you want to change it,,probably a few hundered for the pump , and another ******** for labour at the stealership,,,

ok thanks for the help

There is a service bulletin that covers a noise like you are describing. I think the cure is some sort of replacement boot that prevents air from passing thru the hub area. Basically, there is an area that behaves like a siren in the front drive train at the wheels.

To learn more about it, go to the posting about wanting to find a free service manual. Follow the hyperlink that is fairly far down in the thread that will take you to an online library. Eventually you will see a list of publications for your vehicle. In that list is service bulletins. Go and read.
