i was told there is absolutely nothing i can do for front lift on my 96 X because i have torsion bars, and would need IFS to do anything by a local shop. is this guy bullshitting me or what?

You have IFS, independent front suspension.

You have many options, depends on how much lift you want, budget, and 2wd or 4wd. He's wrong.

i dont know if this is relevant or not.. but after wheeling last weekend, the shop said i need a inner and outer tie rod changed and bearings are loose. now.. i do have a TT done at the front. was planning on going to 3 or 4 inch TT but i might be changing my mind now.
BTW, alec, that ever happen to u? wheel hard and need alignment and the shop said tie rid bad??

i have a 2wd and i want about 5" in front since im doing the soa this weekend. so what is a cheap or at least affordable option?

I've heard of lot of guys cranking their torsion bars up that much. I believe you need to put longer adjuster bolts to get that height. What you need to be careful of is the amount of droop, if any, will be left after the adjustment (droop is downwards travel). You will end up with heaps of upwards travel. Limited droop may cause problems when 4 wheeling cause you will loose drive on the front axle if you go over a hole or something. Also, if you did this, I don't think there is a guarantee that you will get the height you want. The springs only hold so much tension, so if they are stressed or worn, they may not hold up the front like you would like. Although I have never seen it done, I can imagine the angle on the CV's would be extreme and cause accelerated wear. I've just cranked mine up a bit more and now its got 2" of lift. The CV's are just slightly off horizontal.
Alternatively, you can spend some dollars on a Superlift suspension kit. I am told they make a 4" and a 5.5" lift for 2nd gen Explorers. Hope this helps.

I forgot to add another option. I'm not sure who makes them, I have seen them though. Your car is 2wd so you can get different spindles for them. It's not 5" but I think from memory they would be at least 2" maybe 3". Combine that with a slight crank on your torsion bars and your away!

well i think someone said that if your 2wd you dont have to worry about cv's....is that true? yea and i think its a 3" spindle by procomp i think

I guess I never thought of that. You obviously wont have to worry about CV's. I realized after I wrote my first post that you have a 2wd.
