I have this thrumming sound coming from the front of my 02 Sport 4x4 that varies by vehicle speed and believe it is either related to the hubs or rotors. I know the rotors need to be turned down because the brake pedal bounces when decelling so I originally thought this was the cause of my sound too. So I decided to do a little test while on the highway. I figure if I am cruising where the noise is most present that if I press on the brakes and if the sounds changes then it is likely only related to the rotors possibly rubbing the pads intermittently. Well when I am at speed I press on the brakes to see if the sound changes and it does not, which leads me to believe the sound I am hearing is independent of the rotors themselves. At this point I am thinking I may also need to change the hub/bearing assemblies too. I really hope it does not end up being the rotors and hub/bearing assemblies that need to be replaced because, while it isn't hard to replace them, all that crap won't exactly be cheap either.
One of these days I need to jack the front end up and spin the tires to see if I can tell anything further. I also need to perform the turning test to see if the noise changes. I haven't noticed a change in the sound while turning but I admittedly haven't paid close attention to this either. Anyone have any other ideas on how I can tell the difference between the two?
