Just installed new Bilstein HDs. I suspected the alignment was out before I did this but every shock on the rig was completely blown.

So from a standstill, and while in motion, the explorer has a distinct chatter when turn the wheel left or right.

Camber way out?

Chatter as in vibrations in the steering wheel when turning?

If so, you might have got air in the Power steering rack. With engine running, turn the wheel lock to lock (left to right as far as possible) a bunch of times until the air is bled out.

If not, check the torque on the axle nut, make sure you have it tight.

Yup, vibrations in the steering wheel while turning.

I'll try going lock to lock several times tonight. Axle nut? You mean the large one at the end of the cv axle that's behind the brake rotor?

Yes. The large 32mm c/v nut.

Try the lock to lock and if that don't fix it, we can go from there.

Hi There,

I had my Explorer brought home this weekend with a blown fuel pump issue and in the process of off loading it from the wrecker, we pushed the truck back into the carport and cranked the steering wheel (no engine running) a few times left and right to get it into a position where we could work on it. After repairs were complete and engine was running once again, I pulled out of the carport and the steering is chattering something fierce in both directions. Have I screwed something up or is there just air in the system? What do you mean by turn the wheel lock to lock???? And will that procedure cure my problem?

Please help.....I really appreciate it.

Cheers

Muddy

"Lock to lock" means turned all the way. Don't hold it "locked" more than a few seconds, very hard on the system.
