I have a 95 explorer 2wd with roughly a little over 200,000 miles on it. I have replaced the fuel pump 5 times (yes 5 times) in the last 5 years. Recently it died on me while driving, extremely rough idle, hesitation when given gas, and then died and would not restart. Had it towed home, tried starting it and would not start. I sprayed a shot of starter fluid in the throttle body and it did fire up, and to my surprise stayed running, but very rough. I cleaned the MAF sensor, cleaned the idle air control valve, reset the computer and put fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank. Now it starts and runs fine, for a few minutes, then the check engine light comes on and the o/d off light flashes, then dies, no sputtering, just kills. Occasionally it wil idle very rough around 5-600 rpm and kill. When driven it does have a major lack of power. I first thought the fuel pump was gone again but am not sure. I have cleaned the egr valve recently. I am looking for anyones ideas or if they have had the same issue and what the problem was, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ecu?

welcome to the site

I was wondering that about ECU, due to the o/d light flashing like that..

O/D light usually means a transmission related problem. Sometimes it could be as simple as a bad throttle position sensor - or it could have other implications. Get the codes from it - will be a lot more informative.

When my transmission started to go, it wouldn't downshift 2-1 during rolling stops and it would stall the engine.

Otherwise... plugs? wires?

Coils? Have you measured the FP? Check for a clogged cat.

The tranny is about 4 mo. old and about 10,000 mi. on it and seems fine, I had the o/d light flash on me once before the last time the fuel pump went out..

inertia switch maybe?

fuel filter change?

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If you haven't ever changed it that could be why your fuel pump keeps failing. A clogged filter could also explain why your engine dies after starting.

Swap your Fuel Pump Relay If another is the same.
