When we start it up in the mornings it idles rough and constantly stalls until we can get it running. After which the RPM starts bouncing between low and high. When we slow down to a stop it gets really rough and threatens to stall until we give it gas. Our issue is similar to the one in this thread but we have 95 Explorer: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217062
The solution found in the thread was replacing the rubber elbow that connects to the vacuum tube but the 95 doesn't have that elbow at all. We've replaced the pcv valve itself and the vacuum tube doesn't have any issues (thick rubber and no holes).
What really makes this a pain is that we can't get the codes checked since the scanners at the auto store won't read them.
Edited to add: After turning the car off there is a loud squeal that seems to be coming from the dashboard (not under the hood), and the "check engine" light shows up shortly after taking off.
