Hi all,
I'm trying to change to fuel filter on my '98 Explorer (5.0, 2wd) and am feeling like a complete newbie. I've done a bunch of filters over the years, but can't figure this out.

The prefilter line came right off with no issue. The post filter line (closest to the engine) will not come off. What worries me is I don't think it's just an issue with the disconnect tool that I'm using (tried both pastic and metal disconnect tools). The fitting for the fuel line feels like it's completely frozen or rusted onto the filter outlet, as the fitting will not turn no matter how hard I try. If the line/fitting won't even turn, what are the chances that I can get the line off the acutal filter?

I've tried soaking the fitting in PB Blaster, blowing out the fitting with a compressor, etc. Anybody have any other ideas or tricks?

Try spinning the filter to break it loose. Use a wide screwdriver, plier,
or wrench to pry or compress the fuel line tool into the fitting to release.
I found that using force only made it more difficult. Finesse is the key. GL

Lots of PB Blaster too. Soak it, let it set, use the tool, spin the filter, repeat.

I destroyed a filter AND the connectors doing mine using brute force and ignorance. What a PITA getting replacement connectors that will fit those lines. I ended up having to rig it... not a sketchy rig, just a time consuming, not very OEM type of rig.

it is tough to get apart alot of times, cause of rust, i second the twist it approach,,

if it does not work, Dorman makes a replacement part,
getimage.php

i found it at rockauto.com

be careful with the replacements. I found out quickly that there are different sizes for different years/ sub-models. My 2000 EB had to have certain ones that happened to fit the filter but NOT the lines. I ended up having to use rubber fuel line, barbed inserts, and hose clamps to make it all work. Not a Frankenstein job, but not OEM either.
