Hey guys, 1993 4.0 v6 explorer, all stock

I am having alittle bit of a problem. I ran outta fuel right in front of my house (gas gauge broke, I just use the trip meter). I coasted down hill to my house.

I put 10 gallons of fresh gas in the tank and it wouldn't start. I took of the old filter and ran the pump from the relay to get some of the stuff outta the tank and out of the pump. I took about 1/2 gallon of fuel out. I put in a new filter she fired up and ran for about 15 secs and then stalled and wouldn't start. I repeated the process and removed another 1/2 of fuel with the same result.

I can tell It's the filter because the pressure going into the filter is pretty good and gas barely trickles out of the filter.

Any help out there guys?

Could it be the pump its self. Maybe with no filter there is enough pressure to push fuel but with a filter its just too much. Im in the same boat with the gas guage but fortunately havent had this issue when i ran out of gas.

Damn, I've never changed a fuel pump but the pump itself is a hundred bucks plus I bet its a pain to put in. would that explain why it runs for 15-20sec every time i put a new filter in but no longer.

I am thinking of just running a hose in place of the filter and see if the pump is making at least enough fuel pressure to run the motor.

Grab a cheap fuel pressure tester set for fueul injected vehicles and check you pressure at the rail.

My guess is the pump is very weak and yes, its a pain to change. You have to drop the tank.

Doing that is a good way to rune a FPR and the injectors. The injectors have very small openings that can become plugged very easily. Best thing to do is hook up a fuel pressure gauge and test the out put pressure that way so you do not damage any other parts.

It is very likely that the pump can put out fuel when there is no resistance to the flow but once the filter is in place it is to much resistance to the flow. This also would go along with running out of fuel and having junk in the bottom of the tank was it may have gotten up into the pump it's self and damaged it. Best thing to do is if the out put is not there when testing with a fuel pressure gage then you looking at replacing it and you could also fix your fuel gage at the same time being its right there. Also clean the fuel filter soak in side the tank really good to and if you full remove the tank may was well clean it out also of the 20 years of accumulation of junk.

This is also why I try not to run my tank down below a 1/4 tank. I want gas not junk in my pump.

okay, tomorrow morning. sounds like i am going to need to check the fuel pressure and the probably be removing the fuel tank...
