Fuel gauge not working

Hello! This is my first post. I'm glad I found this forum. I just got a 91 XLT 4x4 and realized that the fuel gauge does not work. Is this a common problem? What do I need to do figure out what is causing it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Most likely it's the fuel sending unit. I have the exact same problem with mine.

The little brass float ball has a tendency to spring a leak, fill with gas and sink. Only way to replace is to drop tank and replace the fuel pump assembly, as the float and sending unit are all connected.

All fixed now, it was the sending unit.
