Fuel Gauge not working

On the 92 I just bought for my kid, fuel gauge not working. Where should I start looking first? Any quick test to see if it is the gauge or the sending unit?

rear of the truck ..left hand frame rail near the tank is the electrical conection for the fuel pump / sending unit( takeing the spare out helps ...more room under there) ..if it's a 92 then the float is most likelly shot .....just replace it witha quality pump/sending unit ( all the same unit) witha good warranty .
