How do you guys feel about the "canned" fuel injector cleaners?

Which ones have worked for you and which have not?

Thanks....

Al,
I have used Tranny flluid before to clean out the injectors before, and it actually works. I used to use STP, but heard about the tranny fliud here and tried it. No problems!

aldive, one thing to remember is if your vehicle is still under warranty (not sure if it is, though its a 99 so its probably expired) Ford strongle urges people not to use these. Same thing with throttle body cleaners. Apparently they come from the factory coated with some sort of a protectant, and by using them you take away that protective layer. I don't care though. On my explorer I use throttle body cleaner all the time because it gets so dang dirty in there...
as for fuel injection cleaners... I've used them before but never noticed much of a difference. But if they start getting clogged you could run into loss of power, engine wear, etc.

tranny fluid to clean injectors ??

Hi ray i read your response to clean injectors with tranny fluid . Could you explain how you did this and how much tranny fluid is needed and any specfic brand ?

Thanks Ray and nice truck i like the lift !!!

HI Guggy,
You just buy a can of whatever el cheapo ATF fluid and add it to the Gas, fill up the tank with gas and run it through.

travis (95XLT) went to the dealer and they hooked his fuel injectors up to a machine and cleaned them for 90 bucks? would this be a better way to go? I don't want to wreck that sealant that is on there. Also will i know any significant gains? and how can i tell if my fuel injectors are dirty? Thanx

Yeah, i went to my local ford dealer, had them do a power flush, where the connect the fuel system to a high prewssure maching and actially run the engine just on cleaner. it worked a lot better then any stuff I put in my gas tank. I tried all the stuff you can put in the tank. some of those even lowered my gas milage. The power clean improved the gas milage. I didn't do the ATF thing, because i don't feel comfortable doing that and my Dad said not to put anything in the gas tank thats not made fo the gas tank. If you go to a jiffy lube or a lube pros or someplace you may be able to get a power fulsh for cheaper, but I dunno. One person said he got it for $78 and that included throttle body cleaning.

Can someone describe the symptoms of dirty injectors. I have a car that runs great if you give it a lot of throttle, but seems to stumble at low speed small throttle amounts. It also seems to have a miss at idle that is not consistant. I have ruled out wires, plugs and distributerless ignition coils. It has power when you put your foot in it and speed shift the 5 speed manual tranny but when driving it normally the acceleration seems to be wavy. Oh I also ruled out the brakes dragging since the car will coast out of gear very easliy. The car only has 42000 miles on it. Does this sound like clogged or faulty injectors? The fuel additive doesn't seem to have worked if this is the case. Any ideas.

Redline fuels system cleaner is a great one. For $5 from PepBoys and it treats 20 gallons.

Ive run it in my Jeep and other cars w/o issues.

I know a Jeep guy at work that stands by some product that you can get at any Jeep dealer. Its made by Chrysler and he said you don't put it in your tank, but rather on the injectors. I still don't know what he ment by that...but he said it blew all the carbon out of his injectors and the cylinders.

jim i'm with you on that, my car kind lunges when i'm going slow, like really small, but as i am crusing it seems to drive fine, what could be the cause of this?

The stuff is called Mopar Combustion cleaner. You spray the entire can into the Throttle body while the vehicle is running and then shut the vehicle off let it soak and then drive for a bit. it blows out ALL the carbon. Works good @ $5-7 a can.

AMSOIL Power Foam is similar to the Mopar product and works great.

Will this stuff eat the coating that Ford puts on the throttle body though?

Good TB cleaners don't eat away the TB coating. That is unless you decide to leave them in there overnight or something...but if used as directed, no way, it won't hurt the TB coating.

I can eat out of my TB and upper intake manifold now, they are so clean. Ooh, well, maybe I should not go that far...someone might hold me to it. ehehe.

Sea Foam is good. My friend's dad sucked about a half a can of Sea Foam from the PCV valve then the engine dies by itself so he let the stuff soak for about 5 minutes. When he starts the engine again, there's black smoke spitting out from the exhaust b/c of the carbon. After a few cleanings, the engine transformed from a noisy, disel sounded engine to an engine that is as quiet as it can be. Oh BTW, it's a '89 Chevy Blazer with about 140k.

Rhett is correct. Used as directed, the Power Foam will not harm the TB coating.

Power Flush

Be careful with power flushing older vehicles that have never had it done before guys. A lot of times you will open up leaks and bust seals.

Just to clarify for everyone, Power Foam is not a power flush or part of a power flush system. It is in a aerosol can and sprayed directly into the TB.
