Hi

My gf and I bought a 98 Explorer 4x4 4.0L. However the night after we brought it home I noticed a gas smell in the driveway but didn't see a leak anywhere.

Then the next day I went outside and could still smell it and did see a large spot under the tank area. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start.

So I threw a gallon of gas into the tank and it started right away. I ran it for a minute and shut it off. Didn't notice as bad of gas smell and no drips from the skid plate under the tank.

Next day I went out and theres a bad gas smell and it won't start again. Under the skid plate area is a large spot again.

I looked at the sides of the tank and it looked like it maybe dripped from the top.

So, I was thinking maybe the sending unit BUT why would it all leak out overnight? Doesn't the key need to be on for it to leak from there or fuel line?

I'm thinking of pulling the tank down myself but scared to snap a bolt or even worse, a fuel line.

Anybody ever seen something like this? I know the sending units can be a problem rusting at the elbow...its the leaking out overnight I don't get.

Thanks for any help
