People are always saying the V8's get worse mileage I was thinking we need a thread where people compare/post their Fuel Mileage.

2000 Mountaineer Tow package 130k needs tune up 3.73 gears getting 12mpg city with short trips and lots of idle time. Havent done enought for highway
:salute:

A mixture of highway and city driving

Average MPG=10.4

2000 Mountaineer 5.0L V8 2WD auto 180K 14/16 city, 23 hwy well maintained
2001 Explorer EB 5.0L V8 2WD auto 180K 15/16 city, 23+ hwy well maintained
2001 Explorer XLT 4.0L SOHC 2WD auto 170K 15/17 city 22 hwy not so well maintained

edit: i should add that my hwy miles are driving in a manner to maximize MPG. 55-60 MPH, relatively flat roads, a/c off, warmer weather. it's kinda a game for me. i've also seen 17+ city, but i live in a town with very little traffic.

I suppose you need something other than a V8 to compare to. 1996 4X4 4.0 OHV 140,000. Highway at 60MPH close to 20 MPG. General driving highway and town 16-17 MPG. Winter driving is less but I don't check in the winter! I live in rural MN so I have no numbers for city driving. ;)

'95 4 door 4x4:
'01 SOHC engine running off '95 OHV computer.
Stock 4r55e.
3.55 gears.
265/75r15.

15 mpg average.

'99 Explorer Limited - 4.0L SOHC V6 - 17 City, 21 Highway@70mph, 18 Combined -- well kept
'01 Explorer Sport - 4.0L SOHC V6 - 16 City, 22 Highway,@60 mph, 18 Combined -- (w/ bad intake gaskets/IAC)

I thought people were always saying that the V8 gets virtually the same mileage as the V6, so get the V8 since you get tougher driveline items.

Winter mileages from my Ex's:

1995 4WD OHV V6- 14/18
1997 AWD V8- 14/18
2000 AWD V8- 15/18
2000 AWD V8- 15/18

97 4 door, 4.0 ohv 2wd auto. Mostly stock. 170,x.. miles. average 19 to 21 with city, hwy, and back country roads.

97 5.0 4dr AWD w/police pkg...16 town, 21 hwy. Needs frt suspension work & alignment.

1998 Explorer Sport, 4.0 OHV, 5 spd manual, 4x4, with 137,000 miles

17.3 Average City/Hwy. Boo...

1998 5.0L AWD, auto, towing option (3.73:1 diff), 150,000 miles: 15.5-16 Hwy. I live in a semirural area, so no reliable city number. Well maintained, but mpg about 5% worse now than when new; wish I knew why...

If I get a different EX I sure won't shy away from a V8. Seems to be close to the same gas mileage, and they sound better!

and the V8's are nearly bullet proof and so's the V8's auto transmission.

I agree, mine has been awesome, most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. would gladly buy another.

Which is funny

Because I talked my mother into buying one...

01 AWD 5.0 best has been 16mpg in city. I havn't tested on hwy yet.

Me too, in fact I'm currently looking for another for my son. I'd love to get him something with a little better mileage but my wife will probably sleep better at night knowing he is in a reliable big hunk of steel instead of a little piece of plastic
