Fuel mileage: very specific!

Ok..I know this topic has been beat to death....but I just did a search and read a coupla hundred threads and it seems like I STILL dont have the answer........if you guys can humour me, I;d appreciate it......

If you have (and ONLY if you have):

94 Explorer 4 door
V-6 Automatic 4x4
3.27 gears 30x9.10x15 tires

What are you getting fuel mileage wise???

I get about 12-13 now around town a maybe 15-17 hiway.......

Seems like the FPR is a hot item, but if I am getting average milegae ofr my combination of truck then I wont bother.......

I have a 94 4.0L V-6 with auto.
BUT I have 31's with the same gearing you have. my mileage sucks too. I can't be specific with MPG but I'm eating a tank at about every 150 miles, combined highway and town.

i dont have the same as you but i get around 200 on one tank. i have a drop in k&N, 3.73 auto 4.0 otherwise stock i also commute 5 days a week 40 miles round trip mileage on explorers sux i read somewhere on this site an econobox costs $.25 per mile to operate and our explorers cost $.60

i actually get pretty good gas milage for a truck. I also like the safety factor of driving an SUV. i would not drive an econobox because you get hit and that thing is a pancake. I would rather pay more per mile and be protected better in an accident and also be able to get around in 12"+ of snow with no worries.
BTW I get about 300-425 miles per tank with 4.0 3.73.
I drive with a pretty light foot and it makes a world of differance!

Other things to keep in mind when comparing gas milage: tire types, air pressure in the tires, types of gas (brand and octane), and location of the country. I have a late model '93 XLT. Run BFG AT's 235x75x15 at 36 lbs., 93 octane Texaco, with a K&N drop in. I live in PA and am currently getting 17.442 per mile. I try and go to the exact same Texaco every time using the exact same pump. I have the axle code of 41, which at this moment the ratio is failing to come to memory.

About 250 miles to the 1/4 mark and about 300 - 320 per tank. You guys getting 150 per tank need to check out your sensors (EEC Temp, Oxygen, FPR, etc). I was getting about 180 to the 1/4 mark and changed out the FPR (got 200 - 220 to the 1/4 mark). Then I changed the O2 sensor (due to the FPR) and the thermostat (always read cold) and am now getting about 250 to the 1/4 mark.

before i put in the K&N filtercharger, i would get ~160mi down to the 1/4 mark around town. i never have to use the highways. i fill up with regular gas and everything in my truck is stock

Just a reminder

I would like to remind everyone that the fuel tank capacity between a 2 door and a 4 door Explorer is different. Therefore the comparison in the number of miles per tank someone with a 2 door will be different than someone with a 4 door. I believe the difference is 17 gallon for the 2 door and 21 for the 4 door. A much more accurate method would be the a miles per gallon method.

Needless to say that 150 miles on 17 gallons is not good at all. Right now with my 98 4 door I have about 140 miles on a half tank and most of that is town driving.

Like I said, just a reminder and my 2 cents.

What do you have to do to change the pressure in the FPR? And how would it change fuel mileage? I've changed all the sensors already, anticipating that that would help, no luck, but I keep hearing about the FPR being a dastardly unit causing bad fuel mileage. I'm just curious why?

The fuel tank for the 4 door and the 2 door are identical I believe...would have to hear from a 91 - 94 four door owner to confirm.

The FPR controls fuel pressure, over time it can weaken and send too much fuel into the engine. This usually causes fouling of the O2 sensor. In my case the fuel mileage was terrible and I was getting a check engine light. I was on a trip to Pa to see my girlfriends parents so I bought a FPR from carparts and took it with me. The whole trip was nothing but check engine lights and bad MPG. I believe I filled up three times over the course of the 400 mile trip. Her dad and I changed the FPR and I got back with only two fill ups (roughly 200 to the 1/4 mark per fill up). I still got the check engine light, but that was illeviated by changing that out as well. The FPR on the early models is a definite culprit in any weather (cold or hot) to be the bad mpg.

Now, when winter came I started getting bad mpg again, but this time because of the thermostat. Engine couldn't heat up, so it kept forcing gas in the engine. I changed that and am back to getting 250 to the 1/4 mark.

There is no way to repressurize the FPR, simply change it. You can get the original Motorcraft part from carparts with the 33% discout for $40 and some change. Very easy to change and a good idea if you are near or over 100k.

Just looked up the specs on the 1991 - 1994 out of curiosity, and the two door and the four door have the same fuel tank 19.3 gallons.

Triton you are correct about the 91-94 Explorers. Both the 2-door and 4-door models have 19.3 gal tanks.

But on the newer models (not sure which year they started) the Sports do have smaller tanks.

Just another reason why I like my 91-94 vintage...

I get 320 before I fill up, and usually put about 17.5 gallons which equals about 18.3 MPG with 30x9.5 and 3.27 gearing(5-speed) mods include KKM intake and Borla-catback.
I'd buy a VW if I only got 150 miles per tank, of course if your running 31" tires at 60mph your really going almost 65 so your actually driving more than the odometer says, I would hope

I looked on Carparts.com and they dont list them..........could you post the exact link?

Looked on wrenchead.com and they ahave them, but for $100.........

Far from $40, though, even with a 33% discount........$112.00........ouch.......about $9o with the discount, if you can get it.........

Looks like the price on these has gone up since I bought mine. You can still get the standard ignition one for $48 to $58 after discount depending on your model.

There are two different ones for mine depending on when yours was built during the 1991 model year. I was able to get mine for $40 ($45 with shipping) back in June.

Tank Volumes

From page 216 of my 98 Op Manual

Fuel tank capacity (2 door) -> 66.2L (17.3 gallons)
Fuel tank capacity (4 door) -> 79.5L (20.8 gallons)

Not sure what year this started, but I would assume 95 when the body sytle changed. Regardless to year, stating miles per tank on a forum of various years is confusing and can cause unnecessary troubleshooting.

I get 300-325 on a full tank. Mostly highway miles and I KNOW I have a cronic heavy right foot. I was only getting aroung 275 miles before I did any mods(see signature). My intention for the mods was simply to go faster, the mpg increase was just a bonus. Life is good.

Larger than stock tires

Guys don't forget that if youare running larger than stock tires, you odometer runs slower, so it will make you think youare running less miles that you actually are.

I have had the opportunity to check mine on Highway 395 (they have an odometer check area, where they count 10 miles and you can compare with your trip odometer) Mine turns out 15% slower than it should be. So if my trip odometer reads 200 when I go to the pomp I actually did 230 miles.

You just need to find out what the variance is on your trucks.
