I just got my truck back from my mechanic who did a full tune up on her. My truck also had a check engine light on and my mechanic said that it was because of a fuel pressure issue. Apparently it was caused by keeping the key in the on position in the ignition and opening the filler cap. He works as a mechanic for my county and apparently there was a notice sent out to the police about this issue because of their crown vics. If anyone else has heard of this, please fill me in because I've never heard of this before now. Thanks

Oops, I meant to put this in the ST forum lol. Feel free to move it.

Yes, you shouldn't have your fuel cap off when your key is in the on position. This will cause most vehicles to throw a CEL. This is part of the emissions control system. Fuel evaporates at a low temperature, and this is apparently bad for the environment or something like that, along with being bad for fuel economy, so modern vehicles control evaporative emissions from fuel.

The weird thing is that I never leave my key in the on position and normally never in the ignition at all and the light came on while I was on the interstate and it had been a while since I filled up.

Loose fuel cap or one that doesn't seal properly will do the same thing. Aftermarket and/or locking caps are known to not seal properly on these vehicles and throw the code.

Never really noticed if the cap was loose. I'll have to check that. Never really thought about the cap causing it.
