Fuel pump check valve

The check valve on my fuel pump isnt holding pressure as it should, which gives me the long/hard cold start symptom...Now this isnt currently that big of a problem since i just cycle the truck on and back off and it starts right up, but i want to know if this is a sign of the fuel pump going out. I dont want to get stranded up here at school without all of my tools, like i did with my last explorer and would like to replace the fuel pump before it goes out if this is the case. thanks

Anyone aware of any correlation between a faulty check valve and a complete fuel pump failure within a pretty short amount of time? I'd like to do the switcheroo soon if thats the case.
