I have a 97 XLT 5.0. When the temp outside drops below 20 degress the fuel pump relay clicks repeatedly. The colder it is the longer it cycles. If I try to start it during its cycle it will not start and seems to not be getting any fuel. After the clicking stops it will start fine. If it is above 25 degrees I have no problem. I took it to the shop this week. Of course it was not hta cold out so the problem did not occur. They said that no codes were on the computer either. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I live in NH and I know this problem will leave me stranded somewhere on a very cold day.

1. Relay has connector..pull clean contacts
2. New relay at dealer is $12.00
Sounds like intermittant connection, in relay or wiring..don't forget relay gets on/off
signal from computer.
Good luck.

I will try to clean the contacts in the fuse box today. I have already changed the the relay twice.

Thanks for the idea. I will post the results.

I have a 92 Explorer 4x4, and I've had problems with my relays. Specially the EEC relay that gives power to the computer. I live in San Antonio, and during the summer, the heat seams to screw up the relay to where it will start with a intermittent one second electrical cutout at separate times while the engine is running, to where it will get worse and will stall the engine completly down the road. I have replaced it several times. My temporary fix was to relocate it to a different position on top of the A/C blower motor (in the engine compartment) to see if it would be cooler and get some air circulation. So far I have not had any more problems. I'll see how it goes next summer.
