Hi,
I haven't posted for some time but thought the following may be of interest to others - If this is the wrong place to post such info, please will the Moderator move it to a better location?
Anyway: 1994 Explorer XLT, 147K, used daily on a newspaper delivery route.
It slowly (over three or four weeks) developed the kind of knock/rattle that you get with bad gas (detonation/pinking whatever your term is) every time it accelerated. By accelerating very carefully up to about 65mph you could avoid it but if you came to a hill and the cruise or driver tried to maintain speed it became so obvious and loud that you had to slow down. I tried premium gas, which gave a slight improvement, and octane boosters, which did little or nothing!
Then, 3 nights ago, I'd pulled up (1.00a) to pick up my newspapers and it wouldn't start again - did the 'flooded' thing by firing on 3 or 4 cyls and belching black smoke and then dying - didn't think you could flood a fuel injected engine...
Any, got my wife of bed to bring me our other vehicle so I could do my round and decided to go fix the truck in the morning.
Next morning: Put key in ignition and turned it listening for the usual 2 or 3 sec fuel pump running noise and heard nothing! Said an expletive and muttered something about having to change the expletive fuel pump (using the cut a patch out of the rear floor area that I found in this forum!) when I remembered the relay box on right side under hood. Opened it and the fuel pump relay was very obviously 'burned' up one side - pulled it out - the top came off and showed the area around the contact points very bady burnt/eroded as well as the inside of the cover (which had 'Made in China' on it).
Pulled out remainder of relay, noting that the contacts were very badly burnt/eroded, and replaced it with the Air Cond. relay.
Result: Truck started and the rattle/knock was gone and performance was back to normal. I guess it had been sucking to get fuel for some time and was suffering a very weak mixture...
I don't need anyone to add anything, but if you have anything that might interest others, please do.
Have a good one!
