Hi All,

2006 Mountaineer Luxury model AWD, 4.0L V6

I am about ready to beat my head off the wall. My car will not pass emmissions in PA because the readiness monitors will not complete. Turns out the check engine light was disabled by previous owner and is on (but not lit up). Check gas cap light is also on. Took the vehicle to a local mechanic who is supposed to be an expert on this stuff. He is telling me that the "fuel tank pressure sensor" is bad and that it is located on top of the gas tank. Problem is the dealers are telling me that they cannot find one on their parts lists. The mechanic is swearing the vehicle has one due to the information he has (wiring diagrams possibly??). This problem with the EVAP system is supposedly causing all of the other monitors not to run/complete. I do know that the DTC that was in the vehicle when it failed emmissions was
P0451.

What in the world is going on? Does this mechanic know what he is talking about? Does the mountaineer's explorer's have a fuel tank pressure sensor? Or could the mechanic be mistaken and the faulty sensor is the fuel tank pressure transducer (FTPT), which one dealer found a replacement part for and it is located near the gas tank??? Please, any insight would be appreciated!

According to the manual you have one.

It is located above the fuel tank and connected to some lines.

google this number 9E616

Here is the removal procedure.

1. Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP)
canister. For additional information, refer to
Evaporative Emission Canister in this section.

2. Remove the fuel tank shield from the fuel tank.

3. Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.

4. Disconnect the 3 fuel tank pressure sensor and
tube assembly quick connect couplings from the
fuel pump module and the vapor vent valves.
For additional information, refer to Section 310-00.

5. Remove the fuel tank pressure sensor and tube
assembly.

6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

7. Leak test the evaporative emission system. For
additional information, refer to Evaporative
Emission System Leak Test in this section.

8. Carry out the evaporative emission repair
verification drive cycle. For additional information,
refer to Evaporative Emission Repair Verification Drive Cycle.

Thank you for the info!! turns out the sensor actually comes with the tube assembly attached when ordering a replacement from Ford. This is what was throwing everyone off!! Thank you for the part number you provided...it turned out that is the part that comes with the sensor and tube assembly!

On a side note, I found the culprit of the reason why the check engine light was not illuminating. I took out the instrument cluster panel and did some investigation. As I was dissassembling the panel it was evident that someone was in there who didn't know exactly what they were doing because they broke off on of the clips that removes the black plastic panel off of the instrument cluster itself. Dug a little further and there are no bulbs for the varies warning lights on the panel...there is just a small "chip" on the circuit board that lights up for each of the individual lights. Someone put a freakin piece of electrical tape over the one for the check engine light. If anyone needs to know how to remove the dash and instrument panel let me know, I can give you some direction! Now I just have to go after the dealer who frauded me with the check engine light!!!!
