I have a 2002 Sport 4.0 SOHC with 8500 miles. I use amsoil syntheic motor oil. Lately when my truck goes up hills, a hair burning smell comes out of my exhaust pipe. Yes, i actually stopped to smell my exhaust. What do you think is the problem? HELP

i'm not sure what the smell is caused by but i use full syntheic oil in my truck too - so it shouldnt be because of that type of oil ... did you just switch to syntheic oil after using regular oil? when i did that it smelled a little when it was in the garage but i never actually stopped to smell my exaust ...

Maybe something crawled into your mufler and died?? I think riverrat had a rat die in his truck.

I have used amsoil for about 6 months allready. It ran great all the way out to vegas, but just lately, my exhast smells like burnt hair. I just switched from BP gas to shell. I wonder if different gas will make funny smells.

Honestly, I think Premier is barking up the right tree. There is probably mold or something like hair growing in there.... I cant really think of a single reason for your exhause to smell like burning hair!

maybe you are actually burning someones hair when u drive. someone could have stashed a body in there without you knowing!

I have the same truck and mine is doing this as well. It started with the rotten egg and now it's gotten worse. Smells like burning sulfer or ash. I take my car to the dealer for oil changes so I don't think anything has changed with that. I use the BP and shell and that's not a issue. I know nothing has crawled up and died in my car;)

I am thinking the cat. coverter is screwing up. Any takers???

Yeah, if it smells like ash... thats probably a cat. But hair?!

Well same smell here. When I make the truck work up a hill, or at high speeds,I noticed a strong bad smell.A sort of sulphur or burning too. Loss of power at highway speed if going up big hills. Normally I would think Cat, but it is a 99 LTD 5.0 V8 , with only 40,000 miles. Any ideas?

Althught this link is in reference to a GM, it helps to explain what might be causing ya'lls smelly pipes… an engine running too rich with retarded spark timing.

The fix? According to the link, it sounds like a new MAP or VAC sensor is in order if it's not a simple vacuum leak. And all this time I've been blaming it on dog farts. Poor doggy. ;)

Hope it helps.

hru out.

Bad dog, bad!
