I have a 92 xplorer that is all stock with the crappy 3.27 open gears.

plans for it include tri-y header on the 4.0L with a mild cam and a jet performance module, a C6 (trail rig, no need for OD and a small block C6 is more common here that a C4) NP205 with a doubler. going to a floor shifter and a GM steering manual steering column w/ cruise control switch (will occasionally be on the HWY). full size D44 TTB with chevy 8 lug outers, and a 9.5" GM 14-bolt in the back with 4.56 or 4.88 gears and lockers front and back. 35x12.50/16 unnamed M/T's. A mile marker 8000 pound winch front and back, swing away tire carrier, and maybe an exo cage.

I also have plans for my tow rig as it is donating it's rear axle to the explorer.

plans for it include a D60 front, a 10.5" GM 14-bolt in the back. 3.73's locked front and back (leaving the engine, trans, t-case alone unless I find a good deal on a cummins 5.9T), 33x12.50/16 yoko (hopefully they make this tire in my size) Geolander A/T 2's. A mile marker 12,000 pound winch and a swing away tire carrier.

I can post pics as soon as I have a car domain. I was hosting my pics at TRS but I have no desire to ever use that site again (not bad mouthing, I wish Jim Oaks well, but TRS is just not for me) I have to find a new place to host my pics.

Wow, that is some stout gear. The floor shifter is a good idea too. The 8.8 is strong, but you're going even bigger on the rear. I believe in overbuilding everything, so you sound like you share my philosophy. :)

Go elite here, and you can post your pics on this site...

Question...why keep a ttb? I spent ALOT of time deciding whether or not to keep my ttb, and decided that for the money a straight axle conversion would be the most economical way to get what I wanted. The ttb has alot of cons when it comes to a trail rig (yeah some if not most can be overcome with $$$ and skill). There are guys on here like 410 who have made the ttb really work well though.

I've never built a TTB before, all my big 4x4's have all been converted to straight axle, I want to try something different. I did extensive research on it and think I can get 25+" of wheel travel from it. plus ......... the only advantage I have seen to a straight axle is in deap mud or the rock, I plan on building an all around trail rig that can go fast in the desert as well perform desently in the trails, plus I lack the nessisary fab skills for a coil over sas.

project update

I know its been a while since i was here, but, my trucking company has kept me too busy to start on a project. I sold the 92 explorer for parts and am searching for another with alot less rust.

I am ready to start on my tow rig project because it will be donating its engine and trans to the explorer (when i find another 1), I bought another Suburban with a 6.2L diesel that will be donating its engine and trans to the blue beast (plus a Bank's sidewinder) and the blue beast will be donating its 350 (might go in as twin turbo as i am experimenting with making my own headers), 4L80E, and rear axle for the explorer project.

I have bought hosting on godaddy.com and will be posting my updates there. I will put up the link as soon as my page is built and up.

Hmmm...if you can pull this 350 swap off I wanna see it. If it works... :D

works on gen1 and gen2 rangers, why would in not work on a gen1 explorer?

Well...I have a chevy small block 400 sitting around that needs a new home...and would be awesome in an explorer. Do you have any links to ranger swaps?

there are a few sbc powered rangers on trs ......
