disconnect the battery for 10-15mins or go to a parts store if the CEL is on (ask them to get the code and/or clear it)

Is it just a message on the "message board" or is the "Check Engine Light" on? If it's just a message, don't get too excited about it. Buy a replacement cap at an auto parts store, but get an OE type that exactly fits your vehicle. With the price of gas these days and little sneak thieves everywhere, I replaced my gas cap with an OE locking gas cap and haven't had any problems with it. I think I paid approx: $16 for it. You just may need to replace it even if you can't visibly see something wrong with the old one. You can clear that message by pressing the bottom button on the dash, think it's the "reset" button.

It is on the message board thanks for the input I will try a new cap.:exp:

When my "check gas cap" light came on, I picked up a gas cap at AutoZone and no issues since!

Good luck.

After you install the new gas cap, let everyone know if it solved your problem with the gas cap dashboard message. It may help someone else in the future with a similar issue.
