my gas gauge is not working any ideas?

Could be a cracked float, causing it to fill with gas and sink.

Disconnect the plug at the tank

The gauge should go to full when power is applied. Sensor is 15 ohms empty and 170 ohms full. So, unless the sensor is shorted (highly unlikely) the problem is the float full of gas. If you have a meter, measure the resistance. The sensor will be the two smaller wires in the connector.
