Gas Milleage

I know there are a bunch of threads on gas mileage, but I don't see how some people get even 15 or 16 in the city with there 1st generation explorers because mine (1993 stock) only gets 11.9 to 12 just did the math on it again today and yes I get 12 miles to the gallon

Yes I know it's a SUV and it ways about a ton maybe even 2 tons, and its got 159 thousand miles on it, but how are yall getting that. I'm not the most educated person with cars, but are there anything yall can suggest that I might be able to do?

My brother is a ex Ford Mechanic and he says there really is no way to make it any better, but just wanted to see yalls opinion on it.

My first suggestion would be to do some general tune up work. Change your oil/ filter, new air filter, new fuel filter, and new spark plugs. People seem to be getting the best Milage out of the following:

1. Synthetic oil- Either Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Royal Purple. Considering you are forking out the extra money for the good stuff, it is never bad to buy a better oil filter as well, such as K&N.
2. Autolite Platnum Plugs are OEM for out generation explorers, and seem to perform at least as good as if not better then the hyped up Platnum Plus 2 or 4 plugs.
3. When picking up an air filter, why not just spend 40 bucks and get a nice, quality made part. A K&N drop in filter will last the rest of the life of your car, and is proven to both help the Horsepower and Fuel Economy of a car.

There are plenty of other little ways to help out your milage. Try doing a search on Seafoam, Changing differential lube, and Amsoil Synthetics. This info should hold you over for now though .

Disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes
maybe even try Acetone (definately search for that one)

Ok thanks for the reply, just to update you. We put new spark plugs and wires in it about last july, and changed the oil, put a new air filter etc. All the real main routine tune up work.

I will see what money I have and see what I can do. In the mean time if anyone eles can help that would be appreciated.

From what I have read in other threads, it resets the computer and the system. Suppose to help some how not exactly sure.

It resets the computer and forces itself to relearn everything. ie how much fuel to inject, air fuel ratios, etc. I did this to mine, it now has a perfectly smooth idle and I went from getting 15 mpg to 17 or more mpg. That is city driving too.

Im gonna have to try that on mine. I am lucky to get 15 on mine and it doesn't have any engine mods except for the iridium plugs that i put in there and that actually increased my gas milage from 13 miles per gallon to 15. I have noticed that the iridium plugs have helped out a lot on the power range and hav smoothed out my idle too. They are also a 100k plug that are not gapable. if the plugs get too bad you have to get new ones cause if you try to clean the plug you will break the iridium.

i just put a turbo muffler on mine and the gas mileage went up. before i did this i just had open cats. it was one loud SOB. i got 15 now i get 17 average. here in the spokane aria there is a LOT of backcountry/ hyway driving and the traffic flows well here also. so i think that helps gasmileage. If i lived in seattle or portland i bet i would be in the 12 range from constant stop go traffic

i got 31s stock gears..a bad alignment and a 3 in lift..i got the ifab intake and im ok on the throttle..i reset my ECU when the weather changes here in maryland..and i change my oil on the regular w/ a filter..and i get 10 mpg almost every tank.. im puttin 4.56 in the pumpkings when i get the resta my lift and tires..and then i think im chippin it and mayeb a TB spacer and injectors..all of which should help drastically with my mpg..anybody have any better suggestions?

mustang MAF, 66mm throttle body, Cone filter, remove bug screen, clean out car, run race gas, shave the door handles and mirrors(they create drag...jk), remove roof rack, and drive the speed limit.

I dont think the throttle body spacer will help because the 4.0 is a multi port injection fuel injection not throttle body injection. But if it dooes help tell us, i would like to know.

LOL very true though. If you are paying $10 for a gallon of gas you will be keeping the rpms at 2k or less hehe.

Yea I would like to see if this battery disconnect works, because I asked my brother about it and he said he won't do anything because the computer is just going to learn the same thing over again, accually he said you might get worse at start.

If anything has changed in the way your engine runs, the ammount of air comming in or the ammount of fuel then dissconnecting the battery will help. It something that is normally only done after a new mod has been installed, but it can't ever hurt. At worse it will run funny for about 5 min of driving before it relearns the exact same patterns. But if, for example your air filter is a little more clogged then the last time you reset your computer then your getting less air at idle, and your truck is throwing away gas while ilding rich. . . ect. Check out threads on how to adjust your TB sensor as well, it can wast a lot of gas.

I've got a 92 XL with a manual transmission and I get about 20/22 mpg. I keep good maintance and a K&N air filter. I rarely go over 2000 rpms. I'm trying to get as close to Aldive's 30 mpg as possible. I'm changing out my exhaust and cats in the next few weeks and I've been thinking about a Jet Chip. The best thing I've noticed to get the best MPG is get off the throttle! Keep those rpms down.
