Gas Milleage

Here is some of my findings.

I have 185,000 miles on the engine, 5w30 chevron oil, 3.73, 31s an auto tranny, cone filter, and 2.25 inch pipes from the cat back.

87 octane is about $2.99 a gallon and 92 octane is about $3.25. so it costs about $4.00 more to fill my tank with 92.

On 87 octane i can get 300 miles if i am lucky, and driving like the 18 year old i am but not towing or muddin'.

I also found that with 92 octane, driving like the 18 year old i am, 50 mile trip with 2 fairly large steep hills towing a 20 foot bayliner(my foot was led going up the hills), and it happened to rain last week so i went and got my car muddy. I got 305 miles to the tank.

NOW i filled up with 92 octane, accelerating very slow(Only time i let it go over 2000 RPM is between 40mph and 45mph because at 46mph the torque converter locks up and drops the rpm down to about 1500) and one run down the 1/4 mile(18.1 sec) i have gone 150 miles and it is still at 2/3 of a tank. i think that is pritty darn good.

I am hoping to get 400 miles out of this tank.

Ok i filled my tank today. i drove a total of 375 miles on about 16 gallons of gas. which is 23.5 mpg. I figure i could have gone 440 miles on the tank because at 330miles i had 1/4 tank of gas. and half a tank i had 220 miles.

I use to get 12-13 mpg and then I really changed my driving behavior. I started acceleration more smoothly and over longer distances, I also stopped speeding. These two factors jumped me up to 16 mpg. I just switched over to synthetic oil and I think I'm gonna do new plugs and wires soon as well as clean some sensors. I also need to check and make sure my vacuum modulator isn't going out. After all that I'm hoping to get a little better mileage.

i get 14-15 in the city, im hoping that will go up since i removed the sway bars (forces me to drive slower, might help out with tickets too :p:)

ive always heard that filling up with premium makes little if any difference. mabye i should try myself. premium here is 91 octane.

I just did my Summer Vacation Trip with the '94 Explorer, 4 dr, 4 x 4, auto trans, 3.27 open gears, stock everything......total of 2 adults and an 9 year old on the trip from Vancouver, WA to Los Angeles, CA and back. Traveling 65-75 MPH on the freeway. Cheapest gas (reg. unleaded) was found usually at the ARCO-AM/PM ($2.99), most expensive at the MOBIL Station (Tejon Pass, CA. $3.49 per gallon).

Total Miles........2042.2 miles
Total Gas.........97.441 gals
Total Cost........$295.92
AVE MPG..........20.958 MPG

Aloha, Mark

One proven mod that costs nothing is to change one's driving habits. There are people who get 59 mpg from ordinary cars just by tailoring their technique to the road they're on.

In general, avoid using your brakes. They burn off kinetic energy you've fed into your Ex through the gas pedal. When you brake, you're acknowledging that you just burned more gas in than you needed.

I have raised my mpg about 15 percent just by letting off the throttle when I can clearly see the next signal will be red by the time I reach it.

Also, on my regular commute, I've learned to adjust speed based on repeated observations of the signal timing. For example, approaching a certain major intersection, I know that if I'm not past a particular cross street before the next DON'T WALK signal starts flashing, there's no way I'll make the green. So I let off the gas and coast. That usually enables me to hit the next green in the cycle without braking.

What the hell. I've got nothing else to do with my mind while commuting. ;)
