My 2000 sport OHV is so bad on gas i cant beleive it. I have searched the forum and read alot by member (Aldive) and i cant see what else to do.

Things i have done in the last 3k miles

-changed oil using full synthetic like i always do.

-changed wires, gas filter, and plugs. Used motorcraft but switched to autolite ap103 after one motorcraft plug failed.

-Drop in K&N filter.

-used seafoam in gas and brake booster about three times each.

- tried 38 and 36 PSI in tires.

I get about 155 miles to a full tank of gas. At the prices this is not good. I dont want to sell the truck becasue of this it runs great and i really like it alot but this is bad.

Any points would be appreciated.

thanks

so it got better milage before 3k ago?

could you have gotten a colder plug, causing it to run different? I am not familiar with the plug numbers

First thing is to check the odometer for accuracy... It may be off.,... The thermostat... what kind of driving??? hwy or city..Mine gets from 14.5 to 20.... Then check for codes, does it use oil??? blowby in the oil filler etc... Maybe the front drive shaft is not disconnecting from 4x4 mode...timing????

I changed thermostat the first day i got it which is about 7 months ago. Driving mostly highway 65-68mph. No codes..and the front driveshaft is disengaging. I put it in 4x4 and you can feel it engage and disengage.

Maybe i am forcing the truck more then what a OHV motor can do. I dont know........DAM this sucks i hate to get rid of it becasue of this.

i was getting about 220 with my OHV expy. I get about 280 with my 01 SOHC

just a wild question....how many gallons do you fill up each time? is there any possibilty you have a smaller tank? I dont know if there were different options....

he didnt mention whether he has a CEL? maybe thats burned out

Check engine light does work i know that as a fact. I had to change upper and lower intake gaskets becasue of two codes i think it was P0171 and P0174 if i remember correctly and also just last week a misfire on cylinder 6 becasue of a bad plug. I have the scan tool and i see the 02 sensors fluctuation but not sure if they should be in those ranges. I will check tonight and post up what they are fluctuating at. What should they be at?

Just to answer another question someone asked on how much gas do i put in i always fill it up. If not i will be at the gas station every day or two. I need to look at the manual but i think i have a 16 gallon tank.

thanks

Your not the only one getting horrid mileage with the OHV lately. Its actually been about a year since I have gotten more than 18 mpg or so. I used to get about 25 on the highway when I was real easy on it. Lately I've been averaging 10-13 mpg around town no matter how I drive it. I've changed plugs and wires recently but will be changing the plugs soon again for better ones. I started to notice the lack in mileage when the switched to the 10% ethanol blend around here.

maybe try an octane booster? or fuel injector cleaners? when was your last fuel fliter change?

Fuel filter was changed when i got the truck about 7 months ago. First thing i did. I used about 6 cans of seafoam within the last three months to get rid of all the knocking sound the OHV's are known for which has helped alot and the motor sounds great. Im leaning more to the 02 sensors. I dont think they were ever changed.

Anyone have an idea where the 02 sensors should be flucturating at when i read them from my scan tool?

i would lean towards something else. someone tried to sell me o2 sensors saying it was the problem...it isnt. Get a reading before you do anything. They dont go bad often from what I am reading.

pcv and dslp (i forget the acromyn....that other thing) could be causing it from my reading the posts. dont get rid of the truck...

I also changed the PCV when i got it. As for the DSLP i dont know what that is. I will read the 02 sensors tonight just to make sure they are in the correct ballpark and post the results here. I appreciate all the help and i hope i dont have to get rid of it. I have 109Kmiles and i have to say i love the thing. Except for the DAM GAS ISSUE!

thanks again

Have you cleaned the MAF ( and checked its function )? Have you checked the TB ( cleaned it )?

Have you cleaned the MAF ( and checked its function )? Have you checked the TB ( cleaned it )?

I just changed the plugs last week and gapped them at .54. The MAF yes has been cleaned with the MAF cleaner specific for the MAF that i bought at auto parts store. As for the throttle body yes i cleaned that out with some seafoam and also specific throttle body spray cleaner.

Keep them coming please.

thanks

YOU may be suffering from "WINTER BLEND" fuel.... Especially with Ethanol... This contains Corn Alcohol and does NOT contain as much energy as Summer Blends...

So does this mean every one is suffereing. I havent heard any complaints from family and friends.

Let me ask this what is the MPG my 2000 sport OHV should be getting?

What ARE YOU getting... NOT miles per tank but take the miles and the gallons used to come up with your MPG... YES .... Everyone usually gets worse in the Winter months... Between the Winter Blends, and the Colder Weather(the vehicles usually run richer longer because it takes longer to warm up)... Look at your tailpipe and see if its black... If it is, then it is running rich...Like I said, I am getting as low as 14.5 and as high as 19.89 mpg....Other things to check, brakes for dragging(E cable not releasing all the way).... Tranny, clutch or torque convertor slipping or not locking... One guy on here is claiming to get near 30 mpg... Sorry to say but Physics is Physics... Some may get better than others, But not 10MPG better...
