With this project being somewhat experimental, something like this would be good to have on hand in case the struts aren't strong enough. They'll eventually get weak anyway. This device clamps on the strut rod and prevents it from collapsing. There are several variations and multi-packs. I have one I bought at Menards (midwest home improvement chain) but I've never used it. Years ago I had a prop rod that snapped onto the rod and would fall into place between the end of the rod and body of the strut to keep the strut from collapsing. It was nice because it was automatic if positioned right, or at worst took only 1 hand.
