I am curious with all that I have been reading in posts lately about gearing, how much does it cost to change gears? What would be a reasonable charge to go from 3.27 to 4.10?

It usually costs anywhere from $200-350 per axle for labor, + all the parts.

aj, where you thinking of lifting too? how much? if getting it the lift and gears installed, it will be cheaper to have them do the fornt gears at the same time as the lift if over 4" as the front diff has to be removed to do the lift and the gears anyway... instead of ripping it aprt 2 times, you could kill 2 birds with 1 stone.....

a.j.,
I just had my gears replaced in my X, and it ran $330 per axle for labor. I had bought all the other parts (gears, seals, bearings, u-joints, etc) beforehand, so you have to figure those into your final cost.

Also, I bought a Loc-rite locker for the rear diff and a Detroit E-Z locker for the front. Since they had it all tore apart already, there was no additional fee to install the lockers. :)

I went with 4.56's instead of 4.10's, partly because of replies I'd read here on the forum. I'm very happy with my decision to go with the 4.56's. In overdrive on the freeway I run right around 2200 rpm.

Hope this helps!

Jim

Jim are you running 32 x 11.50's, or 33 x 12.50's ? It's hard for me to tell...

Rhett,

I'm running 33X12.5/15's...Pro Comp Xterrains.

Check my spec's out on my web page, which you can access by clicking on the "Home Page" icon below.

Hey Jammin,

What speed is your freeway drivin? I turn 2250rpm at 70 (freeway speed in WA) with only 4.10's.

I must have got a good deal then. I'm getting mine done for $150 an axle from a Ford mechanic that has his own business. My local 4x4 shop wanted 250 and they didn't even do it, they had a third party come in after hours and do it.

Just curious, do you have have a new carrier for 4.10s and up for the front diff on the 1st gens? I know you don't on the rear.

Happy trails!!

There is a carrier change if you have 3.27 gears or higher (lower number). I think it only cost me like $65 through 4wheel parts. My labor was free, me and my brother did it. It was the first time for me and only the second time he had done it. We just took our time and rechecked everything a bunch of times and read the directions a 100 times. 10,000 miles later and all is good, no noise or vibration.
