heres an update- mileage gain still holding at initial figure- if the lowest youll go is a 3.73- dont waste your time or your money- the 430s are perfect for waking this vehicle up- its still completely streetable and just fine at highway speeds- no apparent downside yet to report- nor do i think theyll ever be a downside- roadpig
Anymore updates from this mod? How is drivability on the interstate? Run into any shift problems with the 6 speed? Is the fuel mileage still up about 1 mpg?
I was doing the math on this one and with a final ratio of .69 in OD with the 4.30 diff and 30" tires your right around 2500 rpms at 75 mph. This seems a little high for my liking so I was thinking that a set of 4.10s would put my rpms at 2375, not a huge difference but the psychological effect is there. I'm not really convinced the locker is completely necessary either, I had this in a couple different situations where the rear tires spun preety hard an both rear wheeels are spinning consistently.
With the 4.10s it would still give the truck a little punch on the bottom end, couple that with an XCal III and this thing should surely be able deliver a little ADRENALIN Rush
So has anyone else done this mod yet? I ordered the gears (4.10's) and will setup a time for install soon!
Still need to get the X-Cal3 for speedo calibration!
I'm sold! thanks for posting this up.
I'll get it done once my new 5.4 goes in so I can have it all tuned at the same time. I might go 4.10 though, as 4.30 sounds a bit steep. I just don't know what to expect from the 6 speed truck with a 4.30.
How is first gear? Is the truck able to shift thru the gears normally with no problem since the tranny is so close ratio'd?
Are you saying "...go with 4.10 gears front and back on the AWD STA's"?
YOWZER... I think that would make this little truck really "haul caboose".
If the gas mileage is minor vs. a significant performance increase, why the heck didn't they do it this way in the first place? Or at least, have the 4.10's on the options list.

I may have an argument for the LSD yesterday I was off the side of the road in some grass.
The grass was a little wet so when I went to pull away a little extra long pedal and the tires start to spin (had the TC disabled) both tires were spinning pretty good until one hit pavement.
After a quick bark the tire on pavement quit spinning completely while the one in the grass kept spinning. It definitley felt like an open diff, so I think the LSD may be on my mod list.
I'm wondering how adding numerically higher gears will work with the AdvanceTrac RSC, especially with torquier, larger displacement motors. I envision lots of extra rear brake wear and tear. I already have enough wheelspin that I'll be adding a Torsen differential (which is compatible with the stability controls) to take some load off of the brakes.
The Gen2 Sport Trac just doesn't strike me as being a full-on off-road machine. I wouldn't spend a lot of money trying to make mine into one. Instead I'd start with a light truck that has tons of aftermarket off-road support, which the ST lacks sorely (and with good reason, I presume).
If you have a 2WD ST and are looking for better off-the-line acceleration, going up two ratios (from 3.55:1 to 4.10:1) will wake up the 4.6 at the stop light. I replaced the stock 3.07:1 gears with 3.73:1 on my Mustang, and it was like a different car. And that was before any other power adders.
