'95 xlt
I have a 95' xlt with a TT and add-a-leaf. I am going to be installing a 2-inch body lift and 32x11.50's. I was curious if i would need or benefit from newer gears or if i will be all right. I currently run 30x9.50's without the body lift and have 3.73's LS. I would appreciate any help since i don't really want to spend more $$ but will if I loose a LOT of power that I need. thanks again!

You should be fine with your current gears. I run 31x10.50's with 3.27's and seem to do alright. I wouldn't go any larger than 32's with your gears though./ the cost to re-gear will be about $450 for gears plus the same for installation...

32" tires with 3.73 gears

I ran this combination for a year and was fairly satisfied. It works fine on the road. Slooow off the line and I would not tow. Off road you will notice the compromise most, the X needs all the low end it can get off road.

Like I said I ran this way for a year, even did difficult trails in Moab, but needed help in some places.

I eventually got frustrated and regeared to 4.56 gears ARB's and 33" tires. This is a more satifying combination for me. I may even go back to 32" tires for a little extra low end. The downside is higer RPM's on the highway - more noise and poorer fuel economy.

Say Guy,

Are the 4.56 gears working good for you? I have 33's on my 94 X and haven't decided whether to go with 4.10's or 4.56's......

I never plan on going faster than 60-65MPH on the freeway, and the longterm plan is to trailer it to runs around the country....My Local gear shop says 4.10's will bring me closer to stock rpm revs but 4.56's would give me more low end torque....

What do you think?

Jim

Jim,
I run 33's with 4.10 grears and although I get a little better MPG, the 4.56's are better for wheeling. I have an Atlas II, so my low end is good. If I had not gotten the AtlasII, I would have went for the 4.56 gears.

What about an EX on 33's not intended to rock crawl with. Almost everyweekend I use it to tow 3 dirtbikes, and 3 people. I'm trying to decide between 4:10s and 4:56. I have no problem only cruising 65mph I want the power for climbing hills with the bikes and trailer. I also use it at teh desert but that's all flat roads and dunes. I have a jeep for rock crawling. I currently have 32" tires and 3:73 and I would like it lower for the towing. I'm thinking going to 33s will make me want to jump all the way to 4:56 not just to 4:10. BTW it's an auto and I'm also thinking the gears will be kinder to the trans as well.
